PRIZES

Steve Weston Prize

This newly-established prize will be awarded annually by the Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust for an outstanding essay on oil and gas law.

In memory of Steven Weston, a leading practitioner of oil and gas law, particularly in developing regions, during his thirty year career with BP and then with Herbert Smith, the Trustees of the Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust have announced an annual essay prize to be funded by BP, Shell UK, Herbert Smith, CMS Cameron McKenna, Linklaters and Wragges.

The Prize, to the value of £1,000, is to be awarded each year to the author of an essay of outstanding merit submitted on a subject to be selected in February of each year by a Panel of representatives of the five funding businesses in conjunction with Steve's wife Anne and his three daughters. The Prize will be announced in October of the year by the Trustees on the recommendation of the same Panel.

In making its recommendation the Panel and the Trust will have particular regard to Steve's interest in oil and gas law in developing regions, and the need to develop the indigenous legal profession in those areas. If in any year no essay of sufficient merit is submitted, the Trustees may withhold the Prize and accumulate the monies for future years.

In this first year (2008) the Prize is open to current students and alumni (holders of Diploma, Masters or PhD) of the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee.

The Essay Title for 2008 is: "Soft Law and Hard Sanctions in Upstream Oil and Gas in Developing Regions - How International Codes, Principles and Protocols Influence National Projects and Developments"

The Winner of the 2008 Steve Weston Prize will be announced in October 2008.

Laszlo Gombos Prize

Each year, the top-ranking student in the discipline of Petroleum Law will receive the Laszlo Gombos Prize in memory of one of the founding-fathers of the CEPMLP.

The Prize is a cheque for £1,000 gifted by the Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust. The prize-winner will be named in the Graduation Booklet.

Madaki Ameh Book Prizes

The fifth prize is reserved for the best graduating student from Nigeria, Mr Ameh's home country. The names of the prize-winners will be included in the Graduation Booklet.

CEPMLP Director's Medal

The CEPMLP Director's Medal is awarded annually to the student who has most effectively demonstrated sound leadership skills and participation in, and promotion of, the activities and ethos of the Centre, both internally to students and staff and externally to the wider community.

The Director's Medal 2007 was awarded to Mr Jairo Ching-Castillo in recognition of his efforts in developing the CEPMLP Student Chapter of the SPE (Society for Petroleum Engineers) which was made the SPE World Student Chapter of the month in April last year. Jairo was instrumental in establishing a very proactive group of students on the committee, negotiating and arranging additional vocational training for students, setting up a Student Chapter web site and arranging visits to external companies.

The winner of the Director's Medal 2008 will be announced in the summer and the recipient will be invited to attend a Presentation Ceremony in the Queen's Hotel on Graduation Day which is Wednesday 18 June 2008. The recipient's name will also appear in the Graduation Booklet.
