David Humphreys is Chief Economist of Norilsk Nickel, Russia's largest mining company, which he joined in late 2004. In this role, he provides advice to the Board and senior management on the outlook for the global metals and mining industry and assists in the formulation and implementation of group strategy. He has been closely involved with the company's expansion internationally and with the development of its programme of investor relations.

He was previously with Rio Tinto for eighteen years, the last eight of these as the company's Chief Economist. In this capacity he served as economic advisor to the Board and was responsible for industry analysis for the Group worldwide. Also falling within his area were business impacts of climate change, regional impacts of mining and Rio's economic strategy for China.

David has written and lectured extensively on the economics of the mining and metals industries, publishing well over one hundred articles and papers. Prior to joining Rio Tinto, David worked for nine years in UK government service, for six of these as an advisor on minerals policy. He has a bachelor's degree and PhD from the University of Wales.

David is a Honorary Lecturer at CEPMLP.
