Dr. Jim Ross has more than 30 years experience in the industry, initially with a major oil company followed by 21 years with an international consulting group. He established Ross Petroleum in 2004 in order to pursue his particular interests in oil and gas reserve/resource evaluation, classification and reporting, and in unitisation and redetermination issues, from technical, commercial and strategic perspectives. He has extensive experience in providing an advisory role to oil and gas companies and governments in a wide range of issues related to reserves and unitisation, including support in contractual negotiations and dispute resolution using expert determination. He has presented comprehensive training workshops in these issues at locations all over the world and has also lectured on reserves at Imperial College, London, as part of the MSc course in Petroleum Engineering.
He has published technical papers on a wide range of subjects and has provided extensive industry support through his commitment to the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and other organisations. He served on the SPE Oil and Gas Reserves Committee, where he played a lead role in the development of the SPE/WPC/AAPG Resource Definitions and Classification System, and was a member of the UNECE Ad Hoc Group of Experts on the Harmonization of Energy Reserves/Resources Terminology responsible for developing the United Nations Framework Classification for application to petroleum. He remains directly involved with the SPE and the UNECE in the ongoing efforts to develop a global harmonized classification system for petroleum resources. He is a Contributing Author for the Oil, Gas and Energy Law intelligence service (OGEL) and was a co-author of an AIPN-sponsored study on international unitisation practice and joint development zones. He has a BSc and a PhD in geophysics from the University of Liverpool, UK, and a Masters (LLM) degree, with Distinction, in Petroleum Law and Policy from CEPMLP, University of Dundee, Scotland.
