Mrs. Janeth Warden Fernandez, a qualified lawyer from Colombia, holds a Diploma in Public Law (Colombia) and an LLM in Resources Law and Policy with Distinction (CEPMLP, Dundee). In addition to currently pursuing research towards obtaining a PhD, she holds a variety of responsibilities at the CEPMLP including Distance Learning Programme Manager, Research and Teaching Fellow, CEPMLP Parternships adviser and adviser to the Mining Programme. In 2005, she was awarded the University of Dundee Honorary Graduates’ Award for Innovative Teaching as a result of her development of the Transnational Negotiation Exercise, which is held every year in co-ordination with the Washington College of Law, American University (Washington D.C.).
She is a member of the Collaborative Group on Artisanal & Small Scale Mining (CASM) Expert Advisory Group and a former external Consultant for UNCTAD within its project on Sustainable Development in Resource-Based Economies: Capacity Building and Policy Networking in Africa and Latin America. In addition, she consulted for the International Institute of Environment and Development (IIED) for its Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project. She is an Editorial Assistant in mining for the Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law (JNRL) and an Editor for OGEL.
Research
Her research interests include Mineral Law and Policy; Community, Indigenous Peoples and Human Rights issues related to the development of natural resources and International Business.
Teaching
Transatlantic Negotiation Simulation Exercise (On-Campus)
The Transatlantic Negotiation Exercise is carried out between the students at the CEPMLP and the post- graduate students at the American University, Washington College of Law, International Legal Studies Programme. The main objective of this exercise is to provide a formal forum, in which using tried and tested methods of international negotiation, in a detailed form, the participants can gain, or improve their negotiating skills. The emphasis is on providing an understanding of the main issues in international negotiations.
