Dr. Subhes Bhattacharyya is a senior lecturer in Energy/ Petroleum Economics at the Centre since 2003 and Programme Director for MSc in Energy Studies. He is also the editor of the International Journal of Energy Sector Management. He specialises in energy economics, energy planning and policy issues, regulation and restructuring of energy industries and energy environment interactions.

He has more than 20 years of involvement with the energy sector in various capacities: graduate-level teaching in energy, research and industry experience.  His earlier appointments include:

  1. Visiting Associate Professor, Energy Program, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok,

  2. Associate Professor, Madras School of Economics, India,

  3. Consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, India,

  4. Economist  with National Economic Research Associates (NERA), and

  5. Design Engineer with Development Consultants Limited, Calcutta, India. 

He offers four graduate level courses in Energy Economics, Energy-Environment and Sustainable Development as well as Regulatory Economics and Restructuring. He also directs the Petroleum Policy and Economics module for Distance Learning. He supervises research of a large number of MSc students and four Ph.D. students.

Dr. Bhattacharyya holds a Ph.D. and a DEA in Applied Economics with specialisation in Energy Economics from the University Pierre Mendes France, Grenoble II, Grenoble, France. He also holds an ME in Energy Planning and Policy from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand and a BE in Mechanical Engineering from Bengal Engineering College, University of Calcutta.

Research

Dr. Bhattacharyya mainly focuses on applied, interdisciplinary energy research on developing economies, with a special emphasis on India and Thailand. His main research themes include:

  1. Sector management issues

    1. Energy access to the poor;

    2. Energy supply security and vulnerability;

    3. Energy sector reform and restructuring

    4. Energy pricing reform

  2. Policy issues

    1. Environment, renewables and low carbon energies;

    2. Analysis of structural changes


Teaching

Economics of Regulation and Restructuring of Energy Industries (On-Campus)

This course aims at introducing students to the concept of economic regulation of energy industries; economic rationale behind restructuring of energy industries and highlighting the tariff and other policy issues related to regulation and restructuring. The course is designed for an interdisciplinary audience and will not require background in economics.

Energy Economics the Issues (On-Campus)

The main aim is to equip the students with an understanding of how economic analysis can help inform and understand energy issues. This requires the students to be familiar both with the relevant economic analysis and technical dimensions of energy. In addition the course enables the student to become familiar with current issues in the industry.

Energy Economics: The Issues - available from 2009 (Distance Learning)

The primary objective of this module is to provide an introduction and background to those essential concepts that allow an understanding of the issues faced by the energy sector from the perspective of an economist.

The emphasis is on understanding

  • The concepts, theories and analytical frameworks to be applied to particular issues or problems faced by the energy sector.

  • How to use basic economic ideas and concepts to analyse the energy sector issues.

The skill is to analyse the energy sector issues relying on simple economic concepts.

Energy Economics: The Tools - available from 2009 (Distance Learning)

The primary objective of this module is to provide an introduction and background to those essential concepts that allow an understanding of the energy sector from the perspective of an economist.

The emphasis is on understanding

  • The basic concepts related to energy demand, supply and investments and their interaction in the economic framework of markets.

  • Specific technical features of the energy sector.

The skill is to identify an appropriate approach or tool to be used to analyse topical issues faced by the energy sector.

Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development – Economics and Policy Issues (On-Campus)

The aim of this course is to help students to understand: the interactions between energy, environment and the climate; economic and other instruments to deal with energy-environment problems; the role of energy in achieving sustainable development; policy issues and options related to energy, environment, climate change and sustainable development. The course will not require any prior knowledge of economics.

Petroleum Policy and Economics (Distance Learning)

The main aim is to equip the students with an understanding of how economic analysis can help inform and understand the international oil and gas industry. This requires the students to be familiar both with the relevant economic analysis and technical dimensions of the industry. In addition the course enables the student to become familiar with current issues in the industry.
